Prep tennis: Viewmont’s Wilkinson takes 5A title; Weber’s Harrison loses heartbreaker

SALT LAKE CITY — Viewmont’s Grant Wilkinson took the boys 5A state title in Third Singles, and Tyler Cowley and Mason Cowley (Woods Cross) won a state title in Second Doubles at Liberty Park.

Woods Cross finished in second place with 13 points. Brighton won the team title with 20 points.

Spencer Johnson (Woods Cross) fell to Redd Owen (Brighton) 6-4, 6-2 in the First Singles semifinals.

Jakob Kempema (Woods Cross) lost to Tennyson Whiting (Maple Mountain) 7-6 (7), 6-4 in the Second Singles semifinals.

Wilkinson beat Hudson Roney (Maple Mountain) 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals before beating Derek Turley (Brighton) 7-6 (8), 6-1 in the championship match.

Peter Richards and Josh Lewis (Woods Cross) fell to Parker Watts and Jared Hunt (Brighton) 6-3, 6-4 in First Doubles semifinals.

The Cowleys beat Blair Glade and Justin Allen (Brighton) 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals, then beat Ethan Stanger and Sawyer Peterson (Olympus) 6-1, 6-1 in the finals.

On the 6A side, Layton and Weber tied for fourth place with seven points. Lone Peak teams went unbeaten in the entire tournament and the Knights won the team title with 30 points.

Giovani Claus (Herriman) beat Cooper Harrison (Weber) 6-0, 6-2 in the First Singles semifinals. Lone Peak’s Brigham Andrus beat Claus 6-1, 6-1 in the final.

Bridger Harrison (Weber) beat Cade Condie (American Fork) 6-0, 6-0 in the Second Singles semifinals, then took a tough, three-set loss to Micah Heimuli (Lone Peak) 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (6) in the finals.

Heimuli defeated Chase Boisjolie (Layton) 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Tyler Wells (Lone Peak) bested Walker Kemp (Layton) 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles semifinals. Wells def. Easton McBeth (American Fork) 6-0, 6-2 in the finals.
